DIY potholders are a classic crochet idea that is ideal as an introduction to crochet. Made in natural modern colors and decorated with pretty hangers and labels, they belong in every kitchen!
You crochet with needle size 4.0 and the cotton yarn "puppets Lyric", 8/8. This is a classic potholder yarn made of 100% cotton, with a smooth matte thread. Unwind about 130 cm from the yarn and double this thread.
Initial loop:
Shape the yarn end of the doubled yarn into a "little pretzel" - pass the needle through - pull the yarn through - tighten.
Air stitches:
Crochet a chain of 40 air stitches from the doubled thread by pulling the thread through the last stitch with the crochet hook as a new stitch. These make up the first row of stitches. At the end of the row, crochet an extra air stitch (for a total of 41 air stitches) to get you to the top!
From here on, crochet solid stitches row after row:
Each time, the crochet hook is inserted into the next stitch. The loop that is pulled out remains on the crochet hook, and another loop is formed with the crochet hook and pulled through both loops that are on the hook. To begin the next row, each row is completed with an air stitch.
After 44 rows of solid stitches, a square is formed, and the finished potholder measures approximately 21 x 21 cm.
Once the second potholder is also crocheted, strips of leather paper are cut as patches and tags and sewn on by hand. The paper can be stamped beforehand with personal messages for the patches.
