What makes knit felting wool special?

In its unfelted state, natural wool is very soft. It consists of many small fibres which, during the fulling process, bind together to form a felted fleece. As soon as the wool is fulled with soap – whether kneaded by hand or, in the case of knitting felt, using a tennis ball in the washing machine – the typical felt structure and appearance emerge.
