For our project, we used the “Livo” storage jar (approx. Ø 10 cm, height 13.5 cm) and the cotton yarn Rico Ricorumi yarn. This yarn is worked with a size 3.0–4.0 crochet hook.
Step 1: Crochet a chain of chain stitches (basis for the width)
Start with about 56 chain stitches. Chain stitches are the “links” in crocheting, and in this case, they determine how long your crocheted strip will be. Occasionally wrap the chain of chain stitches ( chain ) loosely around the glass: It should go all the way around without being pulled too tight. If your glass is slightly different, simply add a few chain stitches or remove some.
Step 2: Build up the height with single crochet stitches
Now crochet single crochet stitches into the chain of chain stitches. Single crochet stitches create a dense, sturdy fabric—ideal if you want to cover a wind light that will retain its shape well. Continue row by row until you’re happy with the width and the strip covers the desired height on the glass.
Step 3: Check the fit on the jar
Wrap the crocheted strip around the storage jar and check the tension. It should fit snugly enough so it doesn’t slip, but not so tightly that the crocheted piece warps. This quick check will save you from having to make corrections later and ensures that your crocheted wind light fits smoothly all the way around.
Step 4: Close the crocheted piece around the jar
Sew the piece together around the jar at both open ends. This creates a closed cover that decoratively wraps around the jar. When sewing it together, make sure the beginning and end of the rows line up exactly—this ensures the pattern looks even and the seam is less noticeable.
Step 5: Tie a bow
Tie a “ ribbon ” around the top of the glass rim and shape it into a bow. The “ ribbon ” visually anchors the top edge and gives the “ wind light ” an elegant look. If you’re working with multiple colors, you can choose a bow color that matches your stripes so the overall look remains calm and harmonious.
Step 6: Insert the LED tea light and check the lighting effect
Place an LED tea light in the glass and turn it on. The crocheted cover creates a soft, warm glow—perfect as a winter table decoration, for a windowsill or sideboard, or as a small gift. If necessary, shift the crocheted piece slightly until the seam is in an inconspicuous spot and the stripes run straight.
That Extra Special Touch
Your crocheted “ wind light, ” will look especially atmospheric if you combine several storage jars of different heights. This creates a small arrangement of lights that glows cozily without overpowering the room.
