These were covered with gold paint and offered an inexpensive alternative to real gold ornaments, sometimes barely distinguishable from the "valuable" decorations. Quilling became popular in Europe in the 18th century. For English ladies in particular, it was the pastime par excellence and tea caddies and pieces of furniture, for example, were decorated with the filigree paper strips . The settlers eventually brought the crafting technique to America. There, kandelaar were often decorated with quilling.
